Stay Safe Out There
Author David Schmidt highlights how FarSounder’s Argos 350 forward-looking sonar system bolsters safety at sea.
FarSounder Receives Their 5th US Patent
FarSounder has expanded their IP portfolio with the issuance of their 5th US Patent, number 20150369908. The company is the manufacturer of innovative forward-looking sonar systems.
Challenging Boundaries for Sonar Technology
Collisions and groundings have traditionally cost yacht owners millions of pounds in damages. Of course, being able to spot an obstacle before a dangerous situation occurs is what every captain strives for. Conventional echo sounders only tell you the depth of the water you are currently in. In order to anticipate the true waters, you are about to enter you require forward-looking sonar.
Looking ahead: Navigating uncharted waters with FarSounder’s new Argos 350
The Rhode Island-based forward-looking sonar experts at FarSounder have unveiled their latest product in preparation for this year’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Set to make its official world launch during the show, which kicks off tomorrow on 30th October, the new sonar model forms part of the company’s navigation series: the Argos series and is called the Argos 350.
FarSounder Expands Field of View
FarSounder is increasing its navigation sonars’ capabilities by broadening the field of view to up to 120 degrees. Their series of forward looking sonars currently provide users a 90 degree field of view out to 500m and 60 degree field of view out to 1000m.
FarSounder Acquires Japanese Patent
FarSounder, the leader in 3D forward-looking sonar, is pleased to announce the issuance of their fifth patent. It was issued by the Japanese Patent Office, one of the largest in the world. This patent relates to their invention of integrated sonar devices and methods and is FarSounder's first issued in Japan.
Royal Netherlands Navy Vessels Fitted with FarSounder FLS
FarSounder’s Forward-Looking Sonar (FLS) is the latest in innovative maritime technology to be included on the Royal Netherlands Navy’s (RNLN) hydrographic survey vessels, the HNLMS Snellius (A802) and HNLMS Luymes (A803).
Easing the exploration of uncharted waters
Superyatch News takes a look at the latest navigation technology that is enabling yachts to go further afield while also cruising safely.
FarSounder Technology Used in Fishery Research
FarSounder is pleased to announce a collaborative research project using an application of its 3D sonar technology to increase sustainability and benefit the commercial fishing industry. The main focus of the project is to assess pelagic fish species such as menhaden and herring. The technology currently used in many fishery surveys is suitable for sampling bottom-dwelling species but not well-suited for accurately assessing pelagic species.
Development of Underwater Sonar as a Technique for Assessment and Classification of Pelagic Fish in Rhode Island (2017-2019)
Estimating the number of individual fish in a given stock is one of the most fundamental yet challenging aspects of fisheries management. In Rhode Island, Atlantic menhaden and herring are commercially important pelagic fisheries that support a large industry, yet management is difficult because reliable and adequate data are lacking; while existing fisheries surveys do a good job of sampling bottom-dwelling species, they are poorly suited for accurately assessing pelagic species.
The Technology Behind Extraordinary Itineraries
FarSounder’s Forward Looking Sonar identifies obstructions in the water up to 1,000 metres ahead, helping operators to keep ships, guests and crew safe.
FarSounder Helps IHO Improve Cruise Ship Safety
FarSounder has become the first forward-looking sonar technology company to be registered as a trusted node for the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) Data Centre for Digital Bathymetry database, hosted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
New Expedition Ship Fitted with FarSounder FLS
FarSounder’s Forward-Looking Sonar (FLS) will be included on the new luxury expedition cruise vessel by Mystic Cruises, the World Explorer. This latest technology in navigation and obstacle avoidance will be a welcome addition to this state-of-the-art vessel.
Alucia2 Installing FarSounder 3D FLS
FarSounder’s flagship navigation product, the FarSounder-1000 Forward Looking Sonar (FLS), has been selected by the OceanX exploration team to help provide safe passage for Alucia2, their new 85.3m research and exploration yacht. Admarel BV, a member of the Alewijnse Group, is the FarSounder dealer in the Netherlands instrumental in securing this sale.
Collaboration for Safe Exploration
Innovation in cruising is in full bloom. As cruise ship operators continue to seek out new, exciting experiences for their customers, they are rapidly expanding their offerings of exclusive destinations. Their customers are demanding unique itineraries which, in turn, demand the most advanced technologies to bring them there and back safely. One key piece of innovative equipment that has recently grabbed the attention of technical staff is FarSounder’s line of 3D Forward Looking Sonars (3D FLS).
Anything 2D Forward Looking Sonars Can Do, 3D Can Do Better?
We pit 2D against 3D to understand what we can expect from different Forward Looking Sonars. With more and more exploration yachts choosing to operate in challenging environments, the risk of collision with poorly charted obstacles, wrongly placed obstacles (due to GPS malfunctions), or transient obstacles such as ice and submerged shipping containers, increases significantly. Groundings with large underwater structures such as rocks, reefs, sandbanks and shoals are unfortunately significant risks. And the annual costs of groundings and collisions run up into the billions every year.
FarSounder Joins NOAA as a Trusted Node
FarSounder is the most recent company to join the International Hydrographic Organization’s Crowd-Sourced Bathymetry (CSB) initiative by becoming a “trusted node” with NOAA. This project enables mariners to voluntarily contribute seafloor depths measured from their vessels to NOAA’s data repository.
CCOM at UNH Partners with FarSounder
The Coastal and Ocean Mapping (CCOM) at the Joint Hydrographic Center at the University of New Hampshire has added FarSounder as a partner in their Industrial Associates Program. As the globally recognized experts in 3D Forward-looking Sonar technology, FarSounder gives the students a new layer of information for their studies.
